How we work

An agent who reads your record before quoting it

Trucking is a specialty line. Filings, radius and commodity restrictions, and the exclusions that decide a claim are different from ordinary commercial auto. That is all we do.

Virtually every carrier you qualify for

Your submission goes to the markets that fit your operation, not just the one or two an agent knows best. Specialty markets are part of the search for harder-to-place risks.

Your record, reviewed first

We pull your FMCSA safety record and CAB report before quoting, so inspection and crash history that affect pricing are dealt with up front. How CSA scores matter

Coverage explained in plain English

Exclusions, sublimits, radius and commodity limits: we walk through what each quote actually covers so the surprises happen before you sign, not at claim time.

New authorities welcome

First-year carriers have fewer options. We know which markets write new ventures and what underwriters want to see. New authority guide

Business structure questions

Leased-on or your own authority, adding trucks, adding a brokerage: we point out structures that shrink your market access before they become a problem.

Coverage

Commercial trucking coverage we write

Most trucking operations need several of these together. Brokers and shippers usually set the limits they expect to see on your certificate.

Auto Liability (AL)

Pays for injuries and damage you cause to others. FMCSA requires $750,000 for interstate general freight, and most brokers ask for $1,000,000. The insurance company that writes your policy sends FMCSA the filing. MCS-90 explained

Motor Truck Cargo (MTC)

Covers the freight you haul. Watch the commodity list, reefer-breakdown terms and unattended-vehicle exclusions. Cargo guide

Physical Damage (PD)

Covers your truck and trailer for collision, fire, theft and weather. Stated value versus actual cash value matters at a total loss. Physical damage guide

General Liability (GL)

Covers claims that are not about driving, such as injuries at a customer's dock or your yard. Many shipper contracts require it.

Occupational Accident (OA)

Medical and disability benefits for owner-operators who are not covered by workers' compensation. OA guide

Non-Trucking Liability and Bobtail

For leased-on owner-operators when the motor carrier's policy does not apply. The two are not the same thing. NTL vs. bobtail

Getting a quote

Three steps

Tell us about your operation

Your USDOT number, trucks and trailers, drivers, what you haul, where you run, and your renewal date. If you are insured now, your declarations page and loss runs help.

We review and shop it

We read your safety record, then submit your operation to the markets that fit it and follow up with underwriters on questions.

You compare and decide

We lay the options side by side and explain the differences. Coverage starts only when it is bound and confirmed in writing.

Questions

Trucking insurance questions, answered

Who files my insurance with FMCSA?

The insurance company that writes your auto liability policy sends FMCSA the filing (Form BMC-91 or BMC-91X). Your operating authority cannot become active until FMCSA has it on record.

What do I need to get a quote?

Your USDOT number (and MC number if you have one), the trucks and trailers you run, your drivers, what you haul and where, and your renewal date. If you are insured now, your current declarations page and three to five years of loss runs make the quote more accurate.

Does my CSA score affect my insurance?

Yes. Underwriters look at your inspection, violation and crash history, and some markets will not quote above certain thresholds. We review your record before we submit it. Read the CSA guide.

Do you only work with Georgia carriers?

American Trucking Insurance Services holds a Georgia agency license (#240411). Coverage is quoted and bound only in states where the agency holds a license. Call us and we will tell you plainly whether we can help with your operation.

Will switching agents interrupt my coverage?

It should not. Keep your current policy in force until the new one is bound and confirmed in writing, then cancel the old one. How to switch agents.

Is a quote the same as coverage?

No. A quote is an indication from an insurer based on the information submitted. Coverage begins only when the policy is bound and confirmed to you in writing.
